In very basic terms, music therapists use music to achieve non-musical goals. In more clinical terms, the American Music Therapy Association defines music therapy as:
“[The] clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program” (2005).
The Music Initiative provides music therapy services and resources for individuals of all ages who are looking for a unique and engaging way to support developmental, social, cognitive, and communication needs. There are many populations that can benefit from music therapy, including but not limited to:
Autism, Alzheimer’s/Dementia, Hospice/Grief Support, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Parkinson Disease.
Additionally, I am offering parent/child music classes open to children with and without special needs. The Music Engagement classes are on Thursdays from 9:30-10 (0-36 months) and 10-10:45 (3 and 4 year olds. The cost is $10 for thirty minutes and $15 for 45 minutes. All classes are held at The Wright Keys Academy of Musical Arts at 556 Vallombrosa Ave in Chico. If you don’t see something you are looking for just ask and I’ll let you know if there are plans in the works.
